Iron has always had its own importance in both, the industrial world as well the world around our homes, thanks to the innumerable applications of iron in one form or the other. The reducing gas, a majority of times, is the mixture of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide. These two gases in their combined form act as the reducing agent. Another reason for the sponge iron getting its name as directly reduced iron is the fact that the process of directly reducing the iron ore in solid form with the help of reducing gases is known as direct reduction.

The primary reason for the production of sponge iron is to overcome the difficulties that are faced in the conventional blast surface method of iron manufacture. The process of manufacturing the sponge iron is more energy efficient than the blast furnace method because the direct reduction method of manufacturing sponge iron is carried out at lower temperatures. Among the many other benefits of the sponge iron that make it economical are the reasons like sponge iron has a richer content of pig iron, typically 90-94% of the total iron in contrast to the 93% for molten pig iron.

The manufacture of steel and iron takes place in plants and these plants are made up of a number of important devices. One such part of the plants is the waste heat recovery boilers. The primary purpose of setting up the waste heat recovery boilers in plants is to utilize the heat produced in the various processes in the plant and then use it to generate power, thereby utilizing the waste heat. A waste heat recovery boiler contains a number of water filled tubes placed throughout the area of the plant in which the heat is released. When the heat which is at high temperature meets the boiler, stem is produced, which in turn powers a turbine that creates electricity. While the sponge iron makes for an economical choice of iron, the waste heat recovery boilers utilize the waste heat in generating something of use.
